MASTERS OF ARCHITECTURE

SPACES OF BREATH

Iwona Buczkowska – Polish-French architect and urban planner, graduate of the École Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris and former student of Gdańsk University of Technology, founder of her own Atelier established in 1978.

Her work focuses on innovative housing and public-use projects based on frame structures and load-bearing arches, striving for richness of space and light through diversified volumes. In her designs, she develops concepts of multi-level open spaces, gardens, and terraces that foster social interaction. In France, she realized, among others, the Collège in Bobigny, suspended from arches and designed to support innovative pedagogy, as well as the award-winning housing estate “Cité Pierre Semard” in Le Blanc-Mesnil – the largest timber residential complex in the country, recognized as a pioneering example of sustainable architecture.

In 1989, she received the Gold Medal and Special Prize at the 5th World Biennale of Architecture in Sofia, and in 1994 the Silver Medal of the French Academy of Architecture for her lifetime achievement. Her projects have also been distinguished with, among others, the Label d’architecture du XXe siècle. In 2021, she was listed among the architects you should know by Dezeen, recommended by Farshid Moussavi. She is also the recipient of the prestigious Jane Drew Prize, awarded by The Architectural Review and Architects’ Journal for outstanding contribution to architecture and for advancing the role of women in the field.
